I was explaining to a junior female employee today that I "learned" to dress modestly because I work in tech. My first job, the first week, a man stared at me as he walked by, walked into a filing cabinet, and obviously hurt himself. Over and over, every time I showed the slightest amount of skin, at least one male colleague would get "weird". Even ones that I know have great respect for me, would actively avert their eyes and avoid me all day if I wore a skirt slightly above the knee.

It's REALLY ANNOYING. To have to change myself, so others don't act out. It's a fucking rip off.

I don't have a point. I just wanted to say that.

@SheHacksPurple That is sexual harassment and you should report it to HR. 21 years ago, the senior executive at the tech company where I worked couldn't stop staring at my body no matter what I wore. I reported it when a junior employee said she didn't like when the senior executive stared at me. Do not change yourself - CHANGE THE SYSTEM.

@sparker I agree. But that story was 1997. My manager asked me to be his girlfriend, at that same company, a few months later. I said no, and my next co-op term was cancelled. I complained to people I knew, and they told me that I should keep my mouth shut or I would be blacklisted/seen as a problem employee.

It's not ok. But things have really improved since then. Now you can complain and not be ostracized. Not lose your job. It's far from perfect, but less bad

@sparker @SheHacksPurple Can't agree more 'Do not change yourself - CHANGE THE SYSTEM'. Huge task... but things need to change! #WomenInStem #sexualharassment #hope
