If you read nothing else today I encourage you to read @tante's powerful essay about the new ChatGPT Ghibli filter: tante.cc/2025/03/28/vulgar-dis

Confession: I used the Ghibli filter. The result was adorable. But I didn't post the result anywhere because something wasn't sitting right. Couldn't figure out what. Tante's essay put concrete words to my vague discomfort.

I'm a fan of AI. Use it every day. But with every advance, we have to evaluate: just because we can does that mean we should?

@testobsessed That's the real question we have to answer. And it's hard to answer because it's actually a slippery-slope situation, and our culture has trained us to reject slippery-slope arguments. But a little adoption now will grow to greater adoption later, and so on, and eventually that will be enough to overwhelm any ability of individuals to make responsible choices. So when individuals support this technology because it's fine if you are responsible about it, they are enabling irresponsible use more than promoting responsible use. I've seen this cycle play out many times over the years, and it always goes the same way. As William Gibson wrote, "The street finds its own uses for things."

@joshsusser Indeed. Though I think the benefits can be tremendous so I don't want to throw the whole thing away. It's an incredibly difficult situation to navigate. And the political climate makes it so much more difficult to find our way through anything requiring thoughtful, nuanced discussion.

@testobsessed Yes, this situation makes nuance nigh-impossible. That's kind of my point. Sometimes you have to give up on potential progress because the potential downsides are too great, and right now anything that requires nuance to be safe is not a good bet.

@joshsusser @testobsessed if "it always goes the same way" are you suggesting this time it will be different?

Will the horse go back in the barn because this time the slippery slope argument is real?

@testobsessed how do you plan to remunerate the artists you've facilitated theft from? or do you not care?
@testobsessed lmao jesus christ this guy knows nothing about authoritarianism what the fuck crock of shit is this
