Bird Cherry, Vogelkirsche. (Prunus avium)

Named for birds that spread its seeds — they love its small, dark fruits.

Its early blossoms provide rich nectar for bees, making it valuable for honey production.

In some regions, branches are used as Barbarazweige — cut on St. Barbara’s Day (Dec 4) and placed indoors to bloom at Christmas.

The word cherry goes back to Ancient Greek kerasos, via Latin cerasum — root of Kirsche, cerise, cherry.

I'm so looking forward to the annual crabapple bloom at The Arb. And the magnolias, redbuds, rhododendrons, daylilies, tulips, etc. Here are some flower photos I took there during early May 2021. The first shot with the bumblebee was with my Fuji xf80mmf2.8 macro, the second is the xf35mmf2, and the others with the xf23mmf1.4. All of my favorite prime lenses of all time.

A bumblebee flies to collect pollen from white crabapple blossoms. Even at 1/800th of a second shutter speed, only one wing is clearly visible, due to the angle and slightly different position in the cycle. They are busy bees for sure at this time of year. Isn't it cute?
With the F2 lens wide open the pink crabapple blossoms are mostly out of focus, but it creates an impressionistic feel that I really like. The hints of the blue sky complement the vivid pink and balance things out nicely.
It was a really bright and sunny day, so to shoot with the lens open to f2, with the pink crabapple flowers backlit like this I had to set it to 1/8500s at f160. It was also a very windy day, so that balanced things out and froze any motion.
A white magnolia blossom that is growing from a very tiny nub right next to the v of the trunk. It was something that I hadn't seen before, and it made for a very easy shot, with an interesting composition. The light was so beautiful that evening. This is at F1.8 for a shallow depth of field, to blur out the background. Not open all the way to f1.4, so it made more of the flower and back texture sharp.
