Good morning. Lovely sunny day in Tokyo. Charlie journeyed off for an hour on the train across the city to his new school for the first time today.

Bit of a shlep but he's super stoked to have got in there as places are always hotly contested. There are very few city-run senior highschools that have the facilities and courses Charlie wanted: automotive engineering with all the facilities & vehicles to learn on

Desk work for me today. Out shooting tomorrow.

A narrow shaft of late afternoon sun illuminates the door and windows of a passing Keikyu train here in our area of Tokyo. Orange slits of sunshine hit other buildings here and there in this scene, me looking north east from our front staircase. In the background the spiralled entry/exit ramp of a distribution centre by the Keihin Canal, with the word FANCL on it. FANCL is a cosmetics company here in Japan.
Late afternoon sun flares into the top of the frame, as I look down into the playground of the primary school behind our place in Omori, Tokyo. A typical urban Tokyo scene: blocks of flats everywhere, all the way to the horizon.

This remarkable colour image from 1915 shows Sir Ernest Shackleton's crew beside their trapped ship 'The Endurance', weeks before it sank in the Antarctic.

The plate was taken by Frank Hurley 110 years ago during Shackletons doomed Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and is one of only a dozen to survive, as Hurley smashed all his other glass plates to prevent him being tempted to return to the doomed ship to retrieve them.

This is original colour and has not colourised. The image was cleaned & enhanced by Stuart Humphryes.
