Once-dying Mexican river delta slowly nursed back to life rfi.fr/en/international-news/2

"#conservationists secured land as well as #irrigation permits, cleared invasive shrubs and planted thousands of native #trees... After years of this type of work, we now have a #forest of #poplars and #willows on 260 hectares on a stretch of the #ColoradoRiver. Fauna has returned. Many #birds have returned. The rejuvenation has also brought back the #beaver—a species that had largely disappeared in the area"

OMG I think these are beavers.

There was a whole group of them on the grass, but most were startled and went into the lake.

Scale is hard, but they are too big and the wrong shape for otters.

I've seen beavers once before, way out on a quiet stretch of river.

But these guys? In TOWN. There's a road behind me, a lady gardening, her little dog yapping at mine (which startled them)

Polecam i zapraszam do odsłuchu!

My beaver lino block print is hand printed on delicate, translucent, handmade Japanese paper with a deckle edge. This is a North American beaver (Castor canadensis), symbol of Canada. 🇨🇦

April 7 is International Beaver Day. While a species of “least concern” according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, numbers of North American beavers have been literally decimated since colonization. 🧵1/2

The front page of Wikipedia yesterday featured this article about a #beaver dam in the Czech Republic.

The Czech government had promised to restore some wetlands, but they dragged their bureaucratic feet.

So then some #beavers moved in. To quote Wikipedia:
"The beaver-built dams provided ecological benefits, including improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and better water retention, while also saving the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million."

TIL: Our national animal, a Beaver 🦫, was made official in part because the state of New York wanted to make it theirs (they did), and Canadians were like; NO! THE BEAVER IS OURS.

So ya… the US has always got us defining and redefining ourselves. Apparently it’s just a thing. 🤣

Here's your correspondent in a capote typical of the fur trade in the days of yore.

I borrowed this woolen garment from a staff member at Grand Portage National Monument in northeastern Minnesota, where I took part in a rendezvous re-enactment in late summer of 2022.

I found I was unsuited to carrying 90-pound packs of beaver pelts but it's fun to pretend.

Eight miles up the Grand Portage trail from here, as it approaches the Canadian border, is a large beaver pond.

An interpretive sign reads,

"As you cross the boardwalk ahead, look for a beaver dam and a conical beaver lodge built of sticks and soil. You may see beaver tracks or fresh cuttings around the pond's edges. The beaver symbol was on the Coat of Arms of the North West Company and was once the national emblem of Canada."
