The #Senate approved a measure to block some of the #tariffs #Trump has imposed on #Canada, w/a handful of #Republicans joining #Democrats to…halt levies set to take effect this week.

The measure is all but certain to stall in the #House, where #GOP leaders moved preemptively to shut down any attempt to end Trump’s tariffs. But Senate passage on a vote of 51 to 48—hours after Trump unveiled sweeping tariffs on >100 trading partners…, sent a signal of #bipartisan opposition to Trump’s #TradeWar.

#Trump says that #Congress should repeal a #law that would supercharge #US manufacturing of semiconductor chips. The #CHIPS & #Science Act was signed into law by Pres #Biden & heralded as a #bipartisan victory ensuring the US would no longer rely on foreign countries to produce the chips needed in a majority of the #technology we use. Along w/ #Democrats, 24 House #Republicans voted to approve the bill. Many of them were targeted by #FarRight colleagues & #MAGA for backing a Democrat bill.

U.S. Senators Call Out #AutomotiveExecs for Opposing #RightToRepair

Story by Beverly Braga, December 21, 2024

"The rich get richer, except this time Big Government is fighting for the little guy. Yes, you read that correctly and, no, it makes no sense to me either. Apparently, the exception is right-to-repair laws which are being pushed by—wait for it—a #bipartisan effort that is literally scolding #automakers to quit gatekeeping everything and give consumers access to parts, services, and their own personal vehicle data."

The justices said they would consider whether the #law, passed w/ #bipartisan support to address #NationalSecurity concerns, violates the #FirstAmendment rights of… #TikTok users & owners of the wildly popular video-sharing platform.

Oral argument is scheduled for Jan 10, & a ruling could come anytime after that.

TikTok had asked the #SCOTUS to intervene before Jan 19, the deadline Congress set for TikTok’s #China-based parent company, #ByteDance, to sell the platform or be barred in the #US.

In an unprecedented #Bipartisan statement, #Congress and the #Senate jointly pronounced:

"You've had your #Democracy. You put your piece of paper in the box, so shut up and don't bother us. We're busy people. That was it. That was all the Democracy you're going to get."

It was beautiful to see the #Republicans and #Democrats working together for the good of #America

The statement was widely hailed as being straightforward, direct, and on message.

Good News from the #Election no one's talking about: #Maine #Question1, which limits campaign contributions by #billionaires, passes with NEARLY THREE QUARTERS OF THE VOTE.

This shows MASSIVE, #bipartisan, money-overcoming support for a #BallotMeasure to remove money from politics, paving a clear path for similar ballot measures in other states in 2022.

This is the kind of thing we need to rally around, as #activists: undermining the money in #US #Politics, #corruption, and the #TwoParty System in general.

"It was a horrible bill, stupid bill," said #Trump. "It's called ‘extreme power’. You have #ExtremePower... You say, 'Close the border,' & the border's closed. That's it, very simple."

#Harris has said she would push for the passage of the #bipartisan #legislation, which would expand capacity for migrant detention, restrict standards for #asylum claims, & allow the president to shut down the #border if crossings by undocumented #immigrants reached a certain threshold.

We looked at some lists of people whose endorsement for a U.S. presidential candidate indicates their loyalty to “country over party.” One on such lists is Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. House GOP leaders on Sunday unveiled a plan to💥 keep the government funded for three (3) months
-- after Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) opening gambit to avoid a shutdown failed due to opposition from Republicans.

The continuing resolution ( #CR ), which was the result of #bipartisan negotiations in the #House and #Senate, would keep the government funded at current levels through Dec. 20
— setting up a
💥holiday funding fight.

The three-month time frame is shorter than Johnson’s opening offer of a six-month stopgap,
and ❇️the bill notably excludes a Trump-backed measure requiring proof of citizenship to vote.

Republican leaders are aiming to bring the bill up under a regular rule process,
with a #floor #vote on the legislation by #Wednesday,
according to GOP aides.

It would then head to the Senate ahead of the Sept. 30 shutdown deadline.

Johnson warned Republicans against a shutdown in a “Dear Colleague” letter on Sunday.

“While this is not the solution any of us prefer, it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances.
As history has taught and current polling affirms, shutting the government down less than 40 days from a fateful election would be an act of #political #malpractice,” Johnson said,

citing a McLaughlin & Associates survey that found❇️ two-thirds of likely voters oppose a government shutdown.

The bill also directs that👉 $231 million to go the Secret Service, which has again come under scrutiny in the wake of an apparent second assassination attempt against former President Trump.

Johnson outlined the legislation to GOP lawmakers in his letter Sunday, saying:
“Since we fell a bit short of the goal line, an alternative plan is now required.”
