"More than a decade ago, Congress tried to pass SOPA and PIPA—two sweeping bills that would have allowed the government and copyright holders to quickly shut down entire websites based on allegations of piracy. The backlash was immediate and massive. Internet users, free speech advocates, and tech companies flooded lawmakers with protests, culminating in an “Internet Blackout” on January 18, 2012. Turns out, Americans don’t like government-run internet blacklists. The bills were ultimately shelved.

Thirteen years later, as institutional memory fades and appetite for opposition wanes, members of Congress in both parties are ready to try this again.

The Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act (FADPA), along with at least one other bill still in draft form, would revive this reckless strategy. These new proposals would let rights holders get federal court orders forcing ISPs and DNS providers to block entire websites based on accusations of infringing copyright. Lawmakers claim they’re targeting “pirate” sites—but what they’re really doing is building an internet kill switch.

These bills are an unequivocal and serious threat to a free and open internet. EFF and our supporters are going to fight back against them."

"The position of this administration is that the First Amendment does not really apply to criticism of Israel or of Zionism. Trump’s administration is trying to circumvent the Constitution and to criminalize clearly protected speech in the service of a genocidal government whose weapons and political support overwhelmingly come from the U.S.

The tactics employed by the Trump administration are firmly in line with a longstanding German policy of putting support for Israel, no matter how heinous its crimes, above the basic free speech rights of its citizens. In a wide-ranging discussion, Alexander Gorski, a Berlin-based criminal defense and migration lawyer, lays out how Germany has weaponized the concept of anti-semitism to stifle dissent and to suppress speech.

Since October 7 and the launch of the war against Gaza, Germany has targeted residents for deportation and has ignited a campaign of fear among particularly Arab and Muslim residents of Germany. Many German media outlets have joined this frenzy, running tabloid headlines accusing Arab activists of being Hamas propagandists or operatives. More recently Germany has begun trying to deport activists with EU citizenship, people who have a clearly defined right to live in Germany. Among these are citizens of Ireland and Poland. They are also trying to deport a U.S. citizen for participating in protests against Israel’s war. Gorski is one of the lead lawyers representing these activists and many other residents of Germany being targeted for their activism opposing Israel’s war."

"Berlin’s immigration authorities are moving to deport four young foreign residents on allegations related to participation in protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, an unprecedented move that raises serious concerns over civil liberties in Germany.

The deportation orders, issued under German migration law, were made amid political pressure and over internal objections from the head of the state of Berlin’s immigration agency. The internal strife arose because three of those targeted for deportation are citizens of European Union member states who normally enjoy freedom of movement between E.U. countries.

The orders — issued by the state of Berlin, whose Senate administration oversees immigration enforcement — are set to take effect in less than a month. None of the four has been convicted of any crimes.

The cases are drawing comparisons to the U.S.’s use of deportation orders to suppress social movements.

“What we’re seeing here is straight out of the far right’s playbook,” said Alexander Gorski, a lawyer representing two of the protesters. “You can see it in the U.S. and Germany, too: Political dissent is silenced by targeting the migration status of protesters.”"

"[C]onciliation only fuels #Trump’s momentum and his predatory instincts to exact more retribution—just as ABC News’s choice to pay Trump $15 million to settle his lawsuit against the organization only invites further attacks on the press, and Columbia’s capitulation to his unprecedented intervention in its internal affairs bodes ill for the rest of America’s colleges and universities."

#Quakers condemn arrests of #activists at meeting house

March 30, 2025

"The arrests of six female supporters of activist group #YouthDemand at a Quaker meeting house have been condemned by the faith group.

"Quakers in #Britain said the arrests were the first at a meeting house and 'an aggressive violation'.

"The Metropolitan Police said six people were arrested on Thursday evening at the Westminster Meeting House on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a #PublicNuisance.

"The force said it came amid concerns there were plans to 'shut down' London during April using tactics such as road blocks.

"Youth Demand said more than 30 officers were involved with making the arrests.

"Paul Parker, of Quakers in Britain, said he could not recall anyone being arrested at a Quaker meeting house in living memory.

"'The forceful removal of young people holding a protest group meeting clearly shows what happens when a society #CriminalisesProtest.

"'#FreedomOfSpeech, assembly, and fair trials are an essential part of free public debate which underpins #democracy,' he said.

"Police said a further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday - four at addresses in #London and one in #Exeter.

"Youth Demand, which is not affiliated with the Quakers, said the meeting was 'an opportunity to share plans for non-violent #CivilResistance actions' due to take place in April.

"The group claimed a number of houses were also raided on Thursday and Friday as part of the operation.

"Quakers in Britain said: 'Quakers support the right to non-violent public protest, acting themselves from a deep moral imperative to stand up against #injustice and for our planet.

"'Many have taken non-violent direct action over the centuries from the abolition of #slavery to women's #suffrage and prison reform.'

"The Met said the force understood the importance of the right to protest but added that Youth Demand had stated an intention to 'shut down' London in April.

"'We have a responsibility to intervene to prevent activity that crosses the line from protest into serious disruption and other criminality,' a spokesman said.

"On Thursday, officers raided a Youth Demand planning meeting where those in attendance were plotting their April action.

"Six people were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance.

"A further five arrests for the same offence were made on Friday, 28 March. Four of the arrests were at addresses in London and one in Exeter.

'Policing priorities'

"Out of the 11 people arrested, 10 have been released on bail and one will face no further action.

"Asked about the matter on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: 'I have made clear to the police this government's priorities for policing are reducing serious violence... and bringing back neighbourhood policing, those crimes in town centres like shoplifting.'

"Youth Demand, which describes itself as a 'new youth resistance campaign fighting for an end to #genocide', began carrying out acts of #CivilDisobedience last year.

"Its demands of the government include stopping all trade with #Israel and raising money from 'the #SuperRich and #Fossilfuel #elite' to pay damages for the effects of fossil fuel burning."

actionnetwork.orgUrge Congress to stop Trump’s information takeover and attacks on the press! Trump’s Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is trying to destroy PBS and NPR and the House GOP has introduced a bill to gut funding for the public broadcasters. FCC Chair Brendan Carr is targeting CBS, NBC, and ABC for so-called “bias against Trump.” Elon Musk and Marjorie Taylor Greene are loudly attacking PBS, NPR, and any media critical of Trump. Trump’s assault on the free press and open internet began in his first term when he relentlessly attacked the media and his admin undid Net Neutrality. Now, we need Congress to use their power to stop Trump’s information takeover. Musk has said he’s “gunning” for public media. He wrote, “Taxpayer money should not be used to fund propaganda” when referring to NPR — straight out of the Trump media playbook. Rep. Greene called for the heads of NPR and PBS to testify in front of her DOGE subcommittee. Trump’s war on the media paired with Musk’s drive to destroy public services is a dangerous combination. Destroying reliable journalism will only give rise to more right-wing propaganda and disinformation. That’s exactly what Musk, Trump, Greene, and the GOP want. These attacks won’t end until Congress takes a stand to protect the free press, public journalism, and open internet access. Sign this petition to urge Congress to stop Trump’s information takeover and attacks on the press!

"The responsibility of intellectuals is to speak the truth and expose lies."

–Noam Chomsky

#Chomsky emphasizes that those who have knowledge and influence must use their intellect to challenge falsehoods and reveal the truth. Intellectuals, whether scholars, journalists, or thinkers, have a duty to question power structures and educate the public. Silence in the face of deception allows misinformation to spread unchecked.
