George Penney<p>Our amazing Small City <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Fringe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fringe</span></a> festival ended last night here in Aotearoa <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/newzealand" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>newzealand</span></a> I saw 25 shows and I'm slightly delirious and absolutely bonkers with inspiration.</p><p>BUT if you're someone with a Fringe Festival in your neck of the woods, I can't encourage you enough to go.</p><p>Fringe Festivals are where alternate voices can live and thrive, they're where ideas can be explored in interesting, odd and sometimes deliriously funny ways. They're spaces for introspection, celebration and joy.</p><p>All the ones I've attended are safe spaces for people of all makes and models to share their stories (or mad skills) with audiences that can feel seen and heard.</p><p>From kickass trans cabaret performers to 70 year olds trying their first stand up to... you name it... there is room for everyone.<br>So yeah, you might even have a fringe festival in your city and not realise it. And if you do, why not check it out.😊</p><p>That is all. I'm off to sit in the garden, have a cup of tea and to try and get my voice back after absolutely whooping my lungs out at last night's amazing cabaret closer. </p><p>Any typos spotted in this post are contemplating tootling down to their nearest cafe for a Sunday morning cheese scone and a strong cup of coffee. If spotted, please wave from afar. Conversation is not something extroverted introverted punctuation can do for at least another hour or so.</p>

I'm not applying a CW - when I was a kid, this would have caused a 12-year-old to titter, but kids these days have read and seen far more explicit stuff a thousand times.</p><p>So I wanted to post something that wasn't politics, that isn't news or topical. Something amusing, maybe, and something I've not posted before. I happened to be reminded of the novel Singularity Sky by Charles Stross yesterday, which has as <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/inspiration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>inspiration</span></a> for part of it the <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Edinburgh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Edinburgh</span></a> Fringe Festival.</p><p>That reminded me of a Fringe experience of mine. So here it is. It won't make you rich, or smarter, or wiser, but maybe will give you a laugh.</p><p>My partner and I went to a tiny Fringe festival in a small town some years ago. It was basically a whistle stop between two cities in western Canada; I have no idea why the touring Fringe would even stop there, but it did, at least some of it.</p><p>One of the performances we saw was a version of MacBeth. It was highly <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/abbreviated" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abbreviated</span></a>, sort of a cross between a Reader's Digest condensed version, and what you would get if P.D.Q.
