Moonquakes Surprisingly Common
Apollo seismometer data from 1972-77 detected 62 moonquakes near the surface, some strong enough to shift furniture. Unlike #Earth's quakes, the #moon's stiff rock vibrates longer. Causes may include Earth's tidal gravity and heat. Future #lunar homes must be quake-resistant. Buzz Aldrin is shown with a seismometer in an image.

A 26-hour-old crescent #Moon, illuminated by earthshine, sets behind Italy's Dolomites. Captured in a one-second exposure, the phenomenon, first described by Leonardo da Vinci, shows the dark #lunar surface lit by sunlight reflected off #Earth.

The #Moon's dustiness is due to constant micrometeorite impacts creating a fine soil, problematic for Apollo 17 astronauts who repaired their rover with maps and duct tape to manage the dust.

A Blue Banded Blood #Moon
During a #lunar #eclipse, a blue band can appear on the Moon due to sunlight passing high through #Earth's atmosphere, where ozone absorbs red light more than blue. This effect, enhanced in a processed HDR image from Oklahoma, contrasts with the red "blood Moon" lit by sunsets-filtered light in Earth's shadow.

During the March 14 total #lunar #eclipse, the Blue Ghost lander on the #Moon captured #Earth's silhouette with a solar eclipse diamond ring effect at sunrise, showcasing Earth's atmospheric glow but hiding the inner solar corona due to Earth's larger apparent size.

The mission operated for more than 14 days of surface operations and 5 hours into the #lunar night making this the longest commercial lunar mission to date.

Some of the pictures from yesterday. The on and off clouds made it difficult to take photos in the Austin area, but it could be seen without a camera or telescope and it was beautiful.
I saw the last minute or two of the #lunar #eclipse.
Other than that, it was grey and cloudy

A Full Moon occurs at 3.14 radians from the Sun, or Pi radians (180 degrees) in ecliptic longitude. On March 9, 2020, a full Moon rose as the Sun set, captured from Tenerife opposite the setting Sun and Teide's shadow. On March 14, 2025, at 06:55 UTC, it aligns again during a total #lunar #eclipse.
