Ruth Mottram <p>So great to see so many amphibians out in the park tonight. Toads and newts mainly, also heard a frog calling. Had to put on my torch to avoid treading on them, it was warm today but is now cold so they were a bit lethargic moving across the path <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23Phenology" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Phenology</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23Spring" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Spring</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23biodiversity" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#biodiversity</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23ClimateDiary" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ClimateDiary</a></p>

Brad Rosenheim<p>All that to say that this publication from the mid 19th century is a gold mine for climate change research. In this case, the Tampa Bay Times article refers to a research paper published in the journal (magazine) Nature that used the data in the old publication to test the predictions of phenologic models. These models try to understand the timing and cyclicity of processes such as migration, bloom, seasonal die-off, etc. and how these cycles will be affected by climate change. These studies can be quite a bit more challenging for finding an adequate baseline for comparison than, say, a temperature record. That is why this is so cool!</p><p><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/phenology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>phenology</span></a> <br><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> <br><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/ClimateDiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDiary</span></a> <br><a href="https://climatejustice.social/tags/NorthAmerica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NorthAmerica</span></a></p>

Pauline von Hellermann<p>We started <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/ClimateDiary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateDiary</span></a> in Feb 2023 and back then we had a lot of discussion of <a href="https://mastodon.green/tags/phenology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>phenology</span></a> and uncertainty about detecting signs of climate change around us (as well as posting news from “elsewhere”, of course). But now we are in the absolute full swing of things - like, we are all living in it all the time, and it is completely normal and we all know it. Just thinking about how this shift happened so incredibly quickly, in less than two years.</p>
