Weekly lab report:
I collected and plotted temperature and %relative humidity in the region of our laser amplifier. I now have a 12 month record. We have had humidity issues over the past year or so, but I was pleasantly surprised that the ongoing work by the campus maintenance staff has paid off.
The first of the "sample and hold" devices was tested. I installed it with the position alignment system and detector and hooked it up to the oscilloscope. I saw the expected DC signal! Varying the intensity of the beam to be stabilised was not done, but I got a rock solid position, and it behaved as expected when the beam was temporarily blocked
The next day was spent scrounging around the lab for enough parts (2 x beam samplers suitable for the pulsed laser and suitable mounts, beam blockers and SM tube with lens and ND filter for the sensor, and 2 x 15V power supplies.
A highlight of lunch in the Science staff room was watching the water start pouring through the ceiling into a strategically placed wheelie bin. I did have to adjust a wider bucket to minimise the splashes onto the carpet. This ceiling damage must have happened during the TC Alfred event a few weeks prior.
One of the joys of a PhD is managing mental health. I had an interesting episode in the lab on Tuesday which I will talk about seperately. I could not return to the lab for the rest of the week. It is disappointing, given the progress we made over the past few weeks. This was not wholy unexpected and not my first rodeo.I had taken steps earlier to manage it. This journey into the PhD is also journey into my own mental landscape. I have some thoughts and insights already
