Ekrany (Screens), akryl na płótnie, 120 × 100 cm, 2022.

In this painting, I wanted to explore two themes. On one hand, I aimed to juxtapose three types of "framed images" - in the background, there's a window revealing an overexposed image, next to it, an actual painting on canvas in darkness, and in the foreground, two glowing screens. Through this composition, I wanted to highlight the distinct characteristics of these three image types (a meta-painting commentary).

The second theme I wanted to address is the presence of technology in everyday life. In my paintings, I have explored the visual representation of life with computers and in the virtual world. I concluded that the best way to illustrate this was by showing technology's impact on our surroundings and bodies. The painting depicts my brother's computer setup from a few years ago. I remember it with nostalgia. Back then, my brother used two refurbished monitors and a computer that he later gave me when he upgraded to a better one. On the desk, there’s a pair of headphones - the same model we kept buying for years out of habit until they stopped making them. All of those headphones met the same fate - ending up with a broken plug that we couldn't fix because, after replacing it, only one side would work. My brother cut off all those cables and kept them "for later." "Later" came a few years ago when I started exploring technology-related themes in my art. I began attending events with a few of my favorite (headphones) cables tied around my waist as a belt.

It arrived. Now I'm a proud owner of the #HP 204C signal generator.

The HP 204C is a low distortion 1 MHz sinewave generator, a transistorized version of the original HP 200A audio signal generator. It was released in 1969, in the 30th anniversary of the HP 200A - the first product made by Hewlett-Packard in 1939.

There's some unavoidable scratches and corrosion on this ancient machine, but it's still in good working conditions.

Using a Wien bridge oscillator, all the harmonic distortion are eliminated to ~70 dB below its oscillation frequency, still superior to almost all cheap, general-purpose signal generators made today (which are not optimized for low distortion anyway), which all suffer from digital artifacts.

The low distortion of the 204C is impossible to detect directly on most oscilloscopes or spectrum analyzers. Measurements of distortion must be made using a distortion analyzer, a specialized equipment for this purpose.

The glorious days when Hewlett-Packard makes state-of-art semiconductor devices, not crappy laptops...

> The INA series of MMICs is fabricated using HP’s 10 GHz f_t, 25 GHz f_max, ISOSAT™-I silicon bipolar process which uses nitride self-alignment, submicrometer lithography, trench isolation, ion implantation, gold metallization and polyimide intermetal dielectric and scratch protection to achieve excellent performance, uniformity and reliability.

You've heard of #retrocomputing, but what about #retroelectronics ?

This Science Fair 160-in-1 electronics project kit gave me lots of fun back then!

I was like 9yo when my dad bought it for me. From there I could only go deeper in my electronics projects. First, small projects with the 555 chip, then an FM radio kit, and then digital electronics and burning ROMS! (burning them out, I mean 😅 )

So when I got my first computer course, I was already feeling at home :crt_w_prompt: :blobcatcoffee:
