I can't enumerate the number of times I locked up before asking, however...</p><p>I recently had a "procedure" done that required general anesthesia. I explained to the anesthesiologist that I was an author. I asked her if I could count up once she injected the medication into my IV and then report at what point I stopped counting. She said yes. She got kind of all interested and chatty. We talked before and after. [It was a great experience future-R.S.!]</p><p>The result proved unexpected. I remember counting up to 6, but the doctor reported I stopped at 20! As I understand it, one of the meds induces amnesia (or more precisely <em>not remembering</em>). </p><p>It's a weird think I might have been coherent even for a short time and not remembered. RS, Author, Novelist, Prosaist<p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writingLife</span></a>: This is about <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a>, trust me.</p><p>I am <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/shy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shy</span></a>. </p><p>I've lived in 8 decades; still shy. These days they call it <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/socialanxiety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialanxiety</span></a>, which is beautifully fleshed out in the anime, <em>Komi Can't Communicate</em> on Netflix. I highly recommend it. The tag line is: </p><p>“An important thing to remember is, just because a person has problems communicating, doesn't mean that person doesn't want to communicate with others.”</p><p>When I was young, I could literally spend all day worrying about situations that might never exist. When I flubbed something as easy as buying a transfer on a bus, I could think about it for weeks. Heck, I remember that from when I was 15!</p><p>What I ended up doing was rehearsing in my mind what might happen in every <em>new</em> situation I might encounter. Since I really wanted to go places like (gasp!) science fiction conventions and maybe (gasp!) ask questions, I would iterate in my mind through dozens of possible conversation trees, sometimes until the topic became absurd. I became really good at <em>silently</em> and <em>invisibly</em> observing human interactions. </p><p>Over the years, I grew skilled at predicting what might happen at least some of the time. Sometimes I'd amuse myself imagining situations I knew would never happen to me, for example I thought I'd never get married because I couldn't imagine introducing myself.</p><p>(I also took <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/EST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EST</span></a>, but that's another story for another day, and I dare you to look it up.)</p><p>So...</p><p>Now you see how and why I became an <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a>! Lots of training building dialogue and figuring out realistic progressions of events.
