New England schools and food programs take ‘devastating’ hit after #USDAFundingCuts

The more than $1 billion in federal funding helped #schools, #ChildCare programs, and #FoodPantries in 40 states to buy produce and other items from local farmers.

By Amanda Gokee and John Hilliard Globe Staff, Updated March 12, 2025, 3:03 p.m.

"In October, the USDA announced $1.7 billion for states and #tribal governments to purchase #locally and #regionally produced foods for #EmergencyFoodAssistance, including free meals for schools and child-care programs.

"That funding included $1.2 billion to support local food purchases with schools, child-care facilities, food banks, and other institutions, according to the USDA. School meal programs would get $500 million to make food purchases, and states, territories, and #TribalNations would receive another $500 million. Child-care facilities were supposed to get $200 million, the USDA said.

"The money earmarked for food banks, schools, and child-care facilities was meant to help them meet the needs of their recipients and help ensure they had access to healthy foods, according to the USDA at the time."

Today I learned that, in the wake of 2020's SCOTUS case McGirt v Oklahoma, OK courts started to review past cases of indigenous folks who'd been prosecuted in non-tribal courts (b/c McGirt ruling said OK had no right to prosecute major crimes within the rez)... but then the Oklahoma courts said the ruling wasn't retroactive, and then in 2022 SCOTUS decided tribal courts had to share jurisdiction. Tbh, it's too much to sum up in a toot.

A stunning Huni Kuin bracelet that I brought from my travel to a community in Brazil. Look at the beauty of this handmade treasure, it reminds me of what one can achieve with patience. I put it flat for the photo, but I'll take another one later wearing it so you can properly see it.

Trump axed support for #tribal and #Hispanic-serving colleges. They’re not happy about it.

By Zachary Schermele, January 31, 2025

"Among the roughly 600 #HSIs [#HispanicServingInstitutions] across the country that could feel the sting is the University of Texas at El Paso. However, the university's representatives did not respond to a request for comment on how Trump's moves might impact students who attend in El Paso, Texas.

"As part of a flurry of actions on his first day back in office, Trump rescinded several of Biden's orders that established key supports for colleges and universities serving marginalized students. He scrapped Executive Order 14124, which staffed an Education Department office to steer more funding to HSIs (and designed the presidential advisory board of HSI leaders). He also nixed Executive Order 14049, which outlined the same types of assistance for tribal colleges and universities."

Archaeologists Unearth 2,500-Year-Old Ice Maiden with One of the Earliest Recorded Tattoos

In 1993, Russian archaeologist Dr. Natalia Polosmak led a groundbreaking excavation on the Ukok Plateau, a region that spans across Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan and is known for its harsh climate and layers of permafrost. This excavation centered around a burial mound, or kurgan, that had been untouched for over 2,500 years.
Inside the mound, the research team discovered the remarkably preserved remains of a woman, laid to rest in a wooden coffin and surrounded by elaborate burial artifacts. The frigid environment of the area played a crucial role in preserving her skin, hair, and clothing. Numerous items were found at the site, including textiles, tools, and six horses equipped with saddles and bridles, indicative of her high social status.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Ice Maiden was her detailed tattoos, which are among the earliest known and have been exceptionally well-preserved due to the permafrost.
