#Palestine / Documenting Occupation: Basel Adra’s Powerful Testimony at the UN

[...] Basel Adra, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, shares his lifelong commitment to documenting the brutal realities of life under occupation. Starting as a teenager, he captured firsthand the violence inflicted on his village Masafer Yatta by settlers and the Israeli military—from home demolitions by bulldozers to brutal assaults on community members. Despite international recognition for his work, Adra reveals that the cycle of violence, displacement, and injustice continues unabated, with daily attacks that leave Palestinian communities in constant fear.

[...] Speaking at the UN Palestinian Rights Committee on 3 April 2025, Adra recounted harrowing personal and communal experiences, including the attack on his cousin, which exemplifies the systemic oppression faced by Palestinians. He highlighted that these incidents are not isolated but part of a broader strategy to displace Palestinians and seize their land, underlining the complicity of state authorities in facilitating such actions. Adra’s testimony is both a call to action and a plea for global accountability in the fight for Palestinian rights and dignity.

Digging for power / Israeli archaeology conference canceled after government attempts to silence critic

Israel's major archaeology conference was canceled after Heritage Minister Eliyahu demanded the removal of Prof. Raphael Greenberg, who has spoken out against Israel's archaeological practices in occupied territories.

Prof. Greenberg, chair of NGO Emek Shaveh, argues that Israel weaponizes archaeology to dispossess Palestinians and violates international conventions on cultural heritage protection. He also believes that Israel Exploits excavations to justify settler expansion in the West Bank, while excluding Palestinian voices from archaeological discourse about their own heritage, and uses selective archaeology to create political narratives about land ownership.

The academic community united in support of Greenberg's right to speak, even among those who disagree with his views, forcing the conference's cancellation rather than comply with political censorship.

[…] the plans were suspended when Raphael Greenberg [pictured], Professor of Archaeology at Tel Aviv University and chairman of Emek Shaveh, the Israeli NGO which seeks to prevent the politicisation of archaeology in the context of the Israel-Palestine conflict, raised fundamental objections to the conference in an open letter to intending participants. Rather than allow Professor Greenberg to attend and air these objections, the Ministry hastily cancelled the conference.

🧵 1/2: I've been thinking a lot about this video from Sam Stein, an American #Israeli #HumanRights activist. Filmed 4 weeks ago after his detention by the #IDF for resisting #settler violence in the #WestBank (as he's been doing for the past 5 years), it triggers profound lessons, which I hope act as a lightning rod for Western #activists, who often understimate the system at their peril.

Sam starts: "all your legal training goes out of the window when a soldier has his knee on your neck...

#Palestine / Report: Israel committing war crime of forcible transfer, ethnic cleansing practices in Occupied West Bank

A new report by Yesh Din & Physicians for Human Rights Israel documents the forcible transfer of 7 Palestinian shepherding communities (+1000 people) in the occupied West Bank.

Findings indicate this constitutes a war crime under international law, achieved through systematic state policies & settler violence. The report alleges these actions amount to practices of ethnic cleansing.

The investigation highlights the cooperation between the Israeli military (#IDF) and settlers, violating international humanitarian law regarding the protection of occupied populations and creating an environment where Palestinians are forced from their land.

On Escorting and Joining Attacks (Page 55, The Military Section): "Soldiers often escort and protect settlers who attack Palestinians, do nothing to prevent or stop the violence, and with increasing frequency, join the attacks."

On Direct Cooperation and Affinity (Page 55, The Military Section): "However, there is a strong affinity between the Israeli military and Israeli settlers in the OPT, reflected in official policies, local initiatives by soldiers (some of whom are settlers themselves), and close cooperation."

On State Support (Page 51, Israeli Policy Section): "State authorities – government ministries and elected officials, the army, the Civil Administration, and the police – support and assist shepherding outposts, using a wide variety of means, in the name of common political goals."

Eyewitness Account of State Support (Page 30, Al-Mu'arrajat, Quote from Salman Ka'abneh): "...until the settler scourge descended upon us, and the army, police and Civil Administration fully support them."

On Joint Actions and Blurred Lines (Page 32, Wadi a-Seeq Section): "Soldiers and armed settlers, some in military uniforms, arrived at Wadi a-Seeq in several vehicles. They fired in the air, went into tents, beat residents, threatened them, and damaged property." and later on the same page: "Over the course of that day, soldiers and settlers detained and handcuffed three Palestinians from Wadi a-Seeq, stripped them, beat them for hours..."

Palestinian Perspective on Siding with Settlers (Page 57, The Israel Police Section, Quote from Na'im Abu ‘Eid): "When we call the police, they come with the settlers and soldiers and sit down to have coffee with them. They don't protect us. Complaints are useless. The police and the army only protect the settlers."

It also calls for divestment from and boycott of entities operating within illegal Israeli settlements and holding perpetrators of Israeli settler violence to account.

The other resolution expressed its backing for the inalienable right of Palestinians to determine their fate, encompassing their right to establish an independent state and to live in freedom, justice, and dignity.

The UN’s Human Rights Council has adopted two resolutions presented by Palestine that reaffirm the illegality of Israel’s occupation and support the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.

One of the resolutions recognises that Israeli occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is against international law and must be ended.
