I am loving that things are finally moving to make European countries less dependent on US software (especially cloud providers), but I am disappointed that there isn't more of a focus on open source software.
There are several government programs within EU counties to fund the development of open source software. We need WAY more of that, coordinated at the EU level.
The best way to avoid being beholden to big tech is to fund viable open source alternatives.

@notjustbikes the French and German governments open sourced this month a software to replace Notion

BuyFromEU also has active communities on Lemmy

@Damax Reddit and GitHub …
@kaibojens Kai-さんは日本語を勉強していますか?
The comment about GitHub makes more sense on mastodon than on Reddit. It is somewhat funny to get the GitHub-is-evil because of their country of origin on Reddit which comes from the same country and had management madness around their IPO.
Anyway, I’m not an absolutist. I don’t believe GitHub is evil.
@kaibojens Also cutting out GitHub is not easy, China tried multiple time to block access, they reverted it promptly. China really tries to be as independent as technologically possible and GitHub is still accessible.
@Damax Sure, but posting a simple list with alternatives doesn’t require a sophisticated platform like GitHub. Take Codeberg as an example for an alternative platform.
@Damax GitHub is evil because of its owner — Microsoft. This is an unhealthy monoculture and the exact opposite of a diverse and distributed open source culture.
@Damax And, yes I’m learning Japanese but still in the very early stages.
@Damax @notjustbikes same irony with this being on Github
@Damax @notjustbikes in combination with the Dutch government if this is the same project as I am thinking of
@havu discoverability. Personally, I search project on a search engine then GitHub. I don’t go to gitlab, gitea, bitbucket, gogs, codeberg, radicle.xyz, laundpad, …
