Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at the of the page with additional text: “Hitherto Bonhoeffer, under the influence of his American and English experiences, had been very near to absolute pacifism —an unheard-of position in the Germany of that time. Now he began to see pacifism as an illegitimate escape, especially if he was tempted to withdraw from his increasing contacts with the responsible political and military leaders of the resistance. He no longer saw any way of escape into some region of piety. In 1939, when in the course of a lecture tour in America, he was pressed on every hand by his American friends to stay in America and there to take up some task suitable to his ecumenical spirit and his fine sensitivity to church life in other lands, he resolved to return to Germany, into what was clearly a deteriorating situation, and he took one of the last ships sailing back to Germany, before the war. In his Diary he writes, “I do not understand why I am here.... The short prayer in which we thought of our German brothers, almost overwhelmed me.” — Eberhard Bethge, Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Letters and Papers from Prison (1953). Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at the of the page with additional text: “From her early youth, Juliana had great veneration for the Eucharist (as did many of the women of Liège) and longed for a special feast day in its honor. When Juliana was 16 she had her first vision which recurred subsequently several times. Her vision presented the moon in its full splendour, crossed diametrically by a dark stripe. In time she came to understand that the moon symbolized the life of the church on earth, the opaque line, on the other hand, represented the absence of a liturgical feast in honor of Christ's Body and Blood. Not having any way to bring about such a feast, she kept her thoughts to herself, except for sharing them with an anchoress, Eve of Liège, who lived in a cell adjacent to the Basilica of St. Martin, and a few other trusted sisters in her monastery. Her vision is illustrated on the historiated initialletter of her vita as it appears in Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal (MS 945, fol. 2).” — Wikipedia. Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at the of the page with additional text: “Nathan Bailey’s Dictionarium Britannicum of 1730 defines ‘Mothering’ as: ‘A Custom still retained in many places of England, of visiting Parents on Midlent-Sunday; and it seems to be called Mothering, from the Respect in the old Time paid to the Mother Church. It being the Custom for People in old Popish Times to visit their Mother Church on Midlent-Sunday, and to make their Offerings at the High Altar.’ Bailey thus suggests a secularization of a medieval practice, so that people would offer gifts to their own mothers rather than to the church. In the eighteenth century, Mothering” seems to have been a regional custom. Correspondents to the Gentleman’s Magazine in the 1780s are very vague about this day, but believe it may have associations with food or drink. When ‘H.T.’ mentioned ‘furmety on Mothering-Sunday’ in a 1783 communication, another correspondent claimed to be unfamiliar with Mothering Sunday, and observed that others probably were too.” — Claire A.
