I took that photo last march...It's an incredible place known as Celeste River ! A river in Tenorio Volcano National Park of Costa Rica. It is notable for its distinctive turquoise coloration. The Celeste River also borders several hot springs and has one large waterfall. It takes about an hour to hike to the waterfall from the park's entrance.

How I took this photo ? Canon R3 - 24-70 mm f2,8 at 24 mm 3' f8 iso 100 Raw
I did 5 shots and use a software to make it a panoramic.

While it probably won't be an issue for 99% of users, just wanted to post another reminder that #TechHub will be moving our server (on which this #Mastodon instance is hosted) from the #US to #Canada, in response to the hostile administration of Elon Musk and Donald Trump. This was planned back in October, contingent on the election results, and will be completed by the 20th.

We will be stationed in #Quebec, where the admin lives, so expect more options for #French speakers, which will be implemented alongside #Espanol and #Portugues as we work to cater better to #CentralAmerica and #SouthAmerica (including #Brasil). We will also be subject to #CanadianLaw, which should not be an issue, as the main difference would be hate speech, which we already explicitly don't allow.

Just letting the #Fediverse know what's happening here. Otherwise, expect business as usual: we will remain committed to providing an open and friendly large-server option for #Tech workers and enthusiasts in #America.

#Climatechange added 41 days of #DangerousHeat around world in 2024

By ALEXA ST. JOHN
December 27, 2024

"People around the world suffered an average of 41 extra days of dangerous heat this year because of human-caused climate change, according to a group of scientists who also said that climate change worsened much of the world’s damaging weather throughout 2024.

"The analysis from World Weather Attribution and Climate Central researchers comes at the end of a year that shattered climate record after climate record as heat across the globe made 2024 likely to be its hottest ever measured and a slew of other fatal weather events spared few.

"'The finding is devastating but utterly unsurprising: Climate change did play a role, and often a major role in most of the events we studied, making heat, droughts, tropical cyclones and heavy rainfall more likely and more intense across the world, destroying lives and livelihoods of millions and often uncounted numbers of people,' Friederike Otto, the lead of World Weather Attribution and an Imperial College climate scientist, said during a media briefing on the scientists’ findings. 'As long as the world keeps burning fossil fuels, this will only get worse.'

"Millions of people endured stifling heat this year. Northern #California and #DeathValley baked. Sizzling daytime temperatures scorched #Mexico and #CentralAmerica. Heat endangered already vulnerable children in #WestAfrica. Skyrocketing southern #European temperatures forced #Greece to close the #Acropolis. In #SouthAsian and #SoutheastAsian countries, heat forced school closures. Earth experienced some of the hottest days ever measured and its hottest-yet summer, with a 13-month heat streak that just barely broke."

Could anyone who speaks #español and #portugues, perhaps from #Mexico, #Brasil, or #CentralAmerica or #SouthAmerica in general, help us with some #translation stuff?

We'd like to translate the #TechHub information pages into more languages, to better serve those communities as an #American server, but without speaking those natively, we can't be confident that the translation is correct and reads right. Right now, we only have someone who can do reliable translation of Quebec-French. (the admin is from Quebec)

#TropicalStormSara to unleash life-threatening #flooding in #CentralAmerica

Tropical Storm Sara will bring an extreme risk to lives and property in Central America where feet of rain may fall before tracking toward #Florida next week.

By Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist

Published Nov 14, 2024

"Rain may pour down for days on the northern parts of #Nicaragua and #Honduras before shifting to eastern parts of #Guatemala, #Belize and southeastern #Mexico this weekend.

"A general 8-12 inches (20-30 cm) will fall in this zone, but a large pocket of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) of rain is forecast from northern Honduras and Nicaragua, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 50 inches (127 cm).

"'This amount of rain will trigger major #FlashFlooding and #mudslides with the potential for catastrophic loss of life and tremendous damage,' AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter warned.

"Some communities could be cut off for days due to washed-out roads and bridges or blocked by debris flows. Demands for rescue and recovery efforts, as well as food and medical supplies, will be great in the wake of the storm in the region.

"Because of Sara's proximity to the #Caribbean for several days, it will likely not unwind fully. As a result, winds, waves and #StormSurge will blast the coast of #Honduras, eastern #Guatemala, #Belize and Mexico's #Yucatan Peninsula. Sporadic #PowerOutages are likely due to #StrongWinds."
