🚀 Cursor: The AI Coding Assistant With 1M Users & $200M ARR — No Marketing Required

Anysphere’s AI coding tool Cursor is redefining how software developers work — and how fast startups can scale.

🧠 Why Cursor is gaining traction:

🔹 Built on VS Code and supports OpenAI, Anthropic, and its own models
🔹 Offers context-aware suggestions, bug fixing, and chat-driven coding support
🔹 Used at OpenAI, Uber, Instacart, and even Major League Baseball
🔹 Grew to 1M+ daily users and $200M ARR with zero marketing spend
🔹 Introduced the term “vibe coding” — embracing AI suggestions to speed up the creative process

With backing from Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI, and others, Anysphere is now turning toward enterprise, onboarding thousands of companies monthly and hiring rapidly.

💬 As founder Michael Truell puts it: "We’re not trying to automate away coders — we’re giving them control."

@raupach I also tried our #cursor last week with my Apache Flink pet project (generating tests for a telco protocol). Was quite impressed first, also how it figured things out and (with hints) corrected mistakes. Also how to build the project (oh no maven). Would have been mostly garbage without my knowledge, but lot faster than myself.
The next thing I tried, however (writing Flink code) was just complete mess and never got it nearly right. I was then faster with a web search.

The past couple evenings I've been #vibecoding (what a horrible name) with #cursor - just to see what it is like to use an agent-based #ai to build an app.

I have not been looking at the code, only chatting with the AI to build the app, add features, fix bugs, address build/runtime issues, etc.

🧵

I'm pretty sure most of y'all here know that #AI (in scare quotes, of course) is a poison pill, but here's my new #blogpost explaining why one doesn't need e.g. #ChatGPT or #Cursor for #programming. Because if we make programming better, we'd need no "AI". Just use #Lisp lol.

LLMs, But Only Because Your Tech SUCKS

Artyom BologovLLMs, But Only Because Your Tech SUCKSLLMs and Vibe Coding are there. But why? Because our tech is not that advanced and we're disempowered by it. Make tech not suck, and you'll need no LLMs.

"Cursor is an amazing tool not just for prototypes but also for maintaining large projects. To use it effectively:

- Setup a generate/ test/ run test cycle. So the AI self-corrects
- Create a project plan and have the AI check and improve this plan
- Finetune your Cursor setup and get used to the different workflow
- It's not just code generation. You can refactor, create docs and use it as a powerful search engine

With the right setup, you can work 5-30 times faster. I especially love that, as an engineer, you can focus more on the harder problems while the AI generates all the basics. I hope this guide helps. If you have more tips, share them with Stream on X, and I’ll add them to the article."
