With the most recent online trend of having AI generated images sort of resembling the art style of Studio Ghibli, nothing sums things up more than this quote by Hayao Miyazaki on similar technology from several years ago:
"I can't watch this stuff and find [it] interesting. Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all."
Which also brings to mind this quote by Guillermo del Toro, said during a conversation with the British Film Institute, where he also, interestingly enough, references Miyazaki and his work later on:
“I saw a demo of AI and I thought oh that's what people think animation is, giving prompts and the computer does it. You know, but AI has demonstrated that it can do semi-compelling screensavers. That's essentially that. The value of art is not how much it costs and how little effort it requires, it’s how much would you risk to be in its presence. How much would people pay for those screensavers? Are they going to make them cry because they lost a son? A mother? Because they misspent their youth? Fuck no!”

Guillermo del Toro's Picks for March | Director Picks | TCM
From the film he considers “quintessential Hitchcock” to his favorite Peter Sellers’ performance, Guillermo del Toro shares the movies he can’t wait to watch on TCM in March.

I'm seriously considering starting a YouTube channel for video essays on Guillermo del Toro's creative output.
I watch so many videos about films and filmmaking on YT, so it felt weird to me that there are so few GdT videos from my favorite film channels.
As I started considering this though I realized the difficulty of trying to discuss his body of work: the man talks so much about his films and his craft.

What begins as a terrific premise and opening set-up for an original tale quickly devolves to action tropes and rehashed storytelling.
Wasn't surprised to hear that Guillermo del Toro has been praising 'The Substance', he explored very similar themes in 'The Outside' episode of his 'Cabinet of Curiosities' series. In a way, Kate Micucci's Stacey walked so Demi Moore's Elisabeth could fly. The short story 'Some Other Animal's Meat' by Emily Carroll, which 'The Outside' adapted and epxanded on, is definitely worth checking out too.
(CW for themes of body dysmorphia explored through body horror)

Today, October 9, 1962, Baltimore cleaner Elisa Esposito spends the night with an Amphibian Man the night before she plans to help him escape (The Shape of Water, 2017, dir. Guillermo del Toro)
Happy Birthday to one of the new Masters of Horror, Guillermo del Toro, who (by all accounts) is just the sweetest man you could ever meet.
Also think #GuillermoDelToro should remake #TheNeverendingStory too.

Guillermo Del Toro's big dumb fun monster #movie You wonder why there are even "human" characters if they're going to be so generically developed.
Maybe so we don't care when they die.
Filled with rousing speeches and father-son motivations that were old when Top Gun did them. Get rimmed.
October 9 is a significant date in Guillermo del Toro's films: it's when Hellboy comes through a portal to our world in Hellboy (2004), and in The Shape of Water (2017) it's the night that Elisa and the Amphibian Man spend together
It's also GDT's birthday! ¡Feliz cumpleaños!

Today, October 9, in 1944, Nazi occultists attempt to open a portal to release the Seven Gods of Chaos. Their attempt fails, but a small, red demon makes it through the portal; he is dubbed “Hellboy” and adopted by Professor Trevor Broom (Hellboy, 2004, dir. Guillermo del Toro)
