#Palestine / Germany, France and UK demand access to Gaza Strip for aid deliveries

Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have jointly called on Israel to lift the blockade on humanitarian aid to Gaza, which has been in place for over 50 days. The three nations warned of a worsening humanitarian crisis, stating that Palestinian civilians, including 1 million children, face risks of starvation, disease, and death. Nearly all international and Palestinian aid organizations operating in Gaza have been forced to suspend or scale back operations.

"We have to say the truth, returning the hostages is not the most important thing."

Israeli Finance Minster Bezalel Smotrich said in an interview with Galey Israel radio on Monday that the release of captives in Gaza was "not the most important thing" for the goverment, provoking an angry backlash from members of the Israeli public, including families of captives in Gaza, who have hit back at the minister's comments.

Smotrich also said that the "Gaza problem" must be eliminated, citing a "tremendous opportunity". Smotrich believes that there are no longer any obstacles to fulfilling a hardline Israeli policy on Gaza after the end of former US President Joe Biden's tenure at the White House and the political demise of rivals, like former Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and former Israeli army chief of staff Herzi Halevi.

Quoting Odeh Bisharat on how Trump's actions, framed as combating antisemitism, a tactic to stifle dissent and suppress the liberal academic establishment, is fueling antisemitism:

[…] This was all the Jews needed. It's not enough that they will be remembered as having killed more than 50,000 Gazans and destroyed 70% of the Gaza Strip; now history will remember that because of them, higher education institutions in the United States are being destroyed and collapsing, in the name of fighting antisemitism and the demand to politically balance educational content and cancel gender and ethnic diversity programs. Harvard University, one of the most important in the world, is fighting for its existence following sanctions imposed by the administration. 'This is 10 or 100 times more than what McCarthy tried to do,' said Larry Summers, former president of Harvard.

Israel murders the 213th journalist in Gaza, along with his family

Tamer Ensyu Miqdad was killed by an Israeli airstrike that targeted his home in the Tel al-Zaatar area of northern Gaza. Miqdad was a writer and reporter, known for raising awareness about the murder of journalists in Gaza. Israel has killed more journalists in its war on Gaza than died during WW2 and the Vietnam war combined.

“If I die, I want a loud death,” schreef Fatima Hassouna op social media. “I don’t want to be just breaking news, or a number in a group, I want a death that the world will hear, an impact that will remain through time, and a timeless image that cannot be buried by time or place.”

Fatima werd gedood door een Israëlische luchtaanval.

The Guardian · ‘If I die, I want a loud death’: Gaza photojournalist killed by Israeli airstrikeBy Hannah Ellis-Petersen

BBC Presenter Richard Bacon calls out the UK PM’s hypocrisy on Israel

Bacon tweeted in response to British Premier Keir Starmer’s tweet condemning Russian airstrikes in Ukraine: “Did he say this about the aid workers shot in the chest in Gaza and put in a mass grave?” The comment pointed out how Starmer will criticise Moscow, but refuses to condemn Tel Aviv.

#Palestine / Photojournalist Fatima Hassona killed by IDF ahead of Cannes documentary debut

Fatima Hassona, a Palestinian photojournalist and the central figure in the documentary "Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk," was killed in an Israeli airstrike on her home in northern #Gaza, according to reports. The documentary, directed by exiled Iranian filmmaker Sepideh Farsi, had been selected for the Cannes Film Festival.

Hassona, a graduate of the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza, documented the realities of life in Gaza through her photography. Hours before her death, she posted a photo of the sunset, and in a previous post, she expressed her desire for a "loud death" that would leave a lasting trace and immortal images.

The International Federation of Journalists (#IFJ) estimates that at least 157 journalists and media workers have been killed since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza. The IFJ mourned Hassona's death and condemned the targeting of reporters, calling for an immediate and independent investigation into her killing and an end to Israel's impunity.

Quoting Heritage minister Emmanuel Eliahu:

[…] He was then asked: ‘How do we now achieve the maximum release of hostages?’ He replied: ‘The way we are advancing is by encircling Rafah, preventing them from receiving humanitarian aid, and we are determined.’ In reality, the military pressure has thus far led to the deaths of more than 40 hostages, most of them as a result of fire from the #IDF. Finally, Eliahu called the struggle for the release of the hostages ‘whims, a quick adventure for the present, romantic, and good only for the short term,’ and said that the aspiration to return them through a deal is ‘childish’ and ‘romantic.’”

Emmanuel Eliahu, a member of #Netanyahu's government, regarding the ongoing conflict and the efforts to release hostages. Eliahu argues that the conflict is prolonged due to a lack of Israeli belief in sufficient strength and the impact of protests against the government's judicial overhaul. He also criticizes the conduct of Israel in accordance with international law and accuses opposition forces of "sedition" and hindering the hostage release process. He dismisses the effort to secure hostages as a fleeting, romantic endeavor.

"It is not the first time the Israeli army has targeted al-Ahli Hospital; it was bombed on October 17, 2023, in a massacre that killed over 400 displaced people taking shelter in the hospital’s crowded courtyard. At the time, directly bombing hospitals was still taboo, so the Israeli army denied targeting the hospital, instead claiming, without evidence, that an allegedly misfired Islamic Jihad rocket had struck the hospital.

In the most recent strike on al-Ahli, the Israeli army this time admitted targeting the hospital but claimed to have been attacking a Hamas command-and-control center. The Israeli army made similar claims in 2023 and 2024 about al-Shifa Hospital in #Gaza City. After the two invasions of #alShifa in November 2023 and March 2024, no evidence could be provided to substantiate these claims.

The Israeli army has not so far provided any evidence of a Hamas command center in #alAhli Arab Hospital."
