"Concerned at the UK Government’s intentions to review the #HumanRights framework and #JudicialReview we have come together to state:

While every system could be improved, and protecting #rights and #freedoms for all is a balancing act, our #HumanRightsAct is a proportionate and well-drafted protection for the fundamental #liberties and #responsibilities of everyone in this country.

The Act guarantees the rights to #FreeSpeech and expression, to life, to #liberty, to security, to privacy, to assembly, and to #FreedomOfReligion or belief. It prohibits torture and guarantees fair trials and the #RuleOfLaw.

Judicial review is an indispensable mechanism for individuals to assert those rights and freedoms against the power of the state." humanrightsact.org.uk/

If Trump wins, he’ll be a vessel for the most regressive figures in US politics

#CPAC is a harbinger of what a second #Trump presidency would bring,
influenced by a consortium of self-proclaimed #Christian #nationalists and #reactionary #dark #money groups like the Heritage Foundation who see Trump as their return ticket to relevancy.

The #Heritage #Foundation has poured $22m into #Project2025, their plan to 🔸gut the “deep state” and radically reshape the government 🔸with a souped-up version of the #unitary #executive theory, which contends that the president should be allowed to enact his agenda without pesky checks and balances.

To paraphrase one speaker at CPAC: ♦️“Welcome to the end of democracy.”♦️

The Heritage Foundation’s policy agenda is disturbingly #radical, even by the standards of the modern Republican party.
They want to #dismantle the administrative state, #ban #abortion completely at the state and federal level, and, as always, #cut #taxes for the rich.

They would put #religious #liberties over civil ones, and #Christian rights over the rights of #women, people of color, #LGBTQ+ people and really anyone who does not look and think exactly like they do.

As Trump himself said in an alarmingly theocratic speech last week:
“No one will be touching the cross of Christ under the Trump administration, I swear to you.”

And we have no reason to doubt him. Russell #Vought, a radical involved with Project 2025 who speaks with Trump at least twice a month, is a candidate to be the next White House chief of staff.

Vought works closely with the Christian nationalist William #Wolfe, a former Trump administration official who has advocated for ending surrogacy, no-fault divorce, sex education in schools and policies that “subsidize single motherhood”.

The Heritage Foundation has even called for “ending recreational sex”.
Media coverage of Trump tends to focus on his mounting legal woes (nearly half a billion in damages and counting) and increasingly bizarre rants (magnets don’t work underwater).

But such an approach misses the point.
We can’t risk focusing on spectacle at the expense of strategy, and he has made his strategy perfectly clear.

A record number of people are heading to the polls around the world this year, including in Asia.
This is particularly significant for the region because with the exception of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, Asia-Pacific is seeing a significant increase in #populism and #authoritarianism, harking back to an era when strongmen presidents ruled with an iron fist.

Hundreds of millions of votes won’t necessarily mean more democracy.
There are a few reasons for this.
We have already seen the rise of less democratic leaders in the Netherlands and Italy, and there is a corresponding trend in Asia.

China’s alternative model of governance, which prioritizes economic #development over civil #liberties, is increasingly appealing.
Many voters have become disenchanted with Western democracies in a post-#Brexit, post-#Trump world, and are actively looking for something else.
Combine that with social media amplifying the message of candidates who can now bypass a press struggling to keep them accountable, and it helps explain the allure of more #authoritarian leadership.
Artificial intelligence tools will only make things worse, as the proliferation of fake news, #misinformation and #disinformation inundate the timelines of a largely young and often unquestioning voter demographic.

A former general linked to past human rights abuses claimed victory Wednesday in Indonesia’s presidential election, a result that would raise questions about the commitment to democratic values in the sprawling island nation that is the world’s third-largest democracy.

Defense Minister Prabowo #Subianto, 72, presented himself as an heir to immensely popular sitting President Joko Widodo, whose son was his running mate.

Citing unofficial results, Subianto told thousands of supporters in the capital, Jakarta, that his victory was “the victory of all Indonesians.”

Two former provincial governors who also competed in the balloting did not concede defeat.

Subianto, who was once banned from entering the United States for two decades because of his human rights record, was an army general during the brutal period of the Suharto dictatorship, which ended just over 25 years ago in the archipelago between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

He served as a special forces commander in a unit linked to torture and disappearances, allegations that he vehemently denies.

Prabowo #Subianto secured a thumping victory in #Indonesia’s presidential election following a hard-fought three-way campaign.

Polls going into the Feb. 14 contest suggested his likely victory, but many analysts had predicted a second-round runoff.

Instead, the defense minister soared past his opponents on the first try, delivering an unexpected landslide with around 58 percent of the votes.

#SLAPPs In Europe: How The #EU Can Protect Watchdogs From #AbusiveLawsuits

In their new policy paper, #Liberties and other rights and #pressfreedom groups explain why abusive lawsuits (SLAPPs) against watchdogs and journalists threaten #democracies in Europe and what governments and the EU should do tackle it.

"The European Commission is set to shortly unveil its proposal for EU-wide measures against SLAPPs. In a new policy paper published today, Liberties and other rights and press freedom groups which form the Coalition Against SLAPPs in Europe (#CASE), explain what SLAPPs are, how big of a threat they are to watchdogs in Europe, and propose what governments and the EU should do tackle the problem.

Censorship by litigation

"Citizens are supposed to be in charge of their democracies. #Watchdogs like #journalists, #rights #defenders and #activist groups are key to enable citizens to get informed, shape their opinions, and keep an eye on people in power to make sure they do what is best for all of us.

"As we explain here, SLAPPs (an acronym which stands for 'strategic lawsuit against public participation'), are a form of abuse of law and justice that #corrupt politicians and powerful #businesses across Europe increasingly make use of to #harass, #bankrupt and intimidate #journalists, activists and other watchdogs into silence. Helped by expensive and unscrupulous law firms, they sue them on grounds of meritless and abusive claims with the purpose of shutting down acts of public participation, including public interest journalism, #PeacefulProtest or #boycotts, #advocacy, #whistleblowing, or simply speaking out against abuse of power."

The sweeping #redstate drive to roll back #CivilRights & #liberties

Since 2021, #Republican-controlled states have passed a swarm of #laws to restrict #VotingRights, increase penalties for #public #protest, impose new restrictions on #transgender youth, #BanBooks, & limit what #teachers, #college #professors, & #employers can say about #race, #gender, & #SexualOrientation.

From #Berlin to #Manchester, the inhumane #regimes of #China and #Iran show their brutality abroad and that they feel nothing but full contempt for democratic #liberties and the #ruleoflaw.

Any personnel of embassies or consulates involved in acts of #violence against peaceful protestors need to be expelled right away. The #viennaconvention does not include a right to exert violence from embassies or consulates (has been an issue with #Turkey in the past as well).
