Nose-shaping technology was at its height in the 1920s. But nasal Lamarckism kicked in, infants began to be born with acceptable noses, and within two generations nasal correction technology was first side-lined and then forgotten. We don't even have back-alley nose-modification clinics nowadays.

A term goblins sometimes use translates to 'other mouth.'

Through trial and error, goblins discovered that the nose can be used to breathe, and even eat!

Eating spaghetti and other foods through your nose can be difficult and awful. Just the sort of thing a goblin might challenge another goblin, or person, to try!

*you probably shouldn't...

This image portrays an existential terror to goblins who ponder too hard on the nose, in the context of an 'other mouth.'

journals.plos.orgInvestigating the case of human nose shape and climate adaptationAuthor summary The study of human adaptation is essential to our understanding of disease etiology. Evolutionary investigations into why certain disease phenotypes such as sickle-cell anemia and lactose intolerance occur at different rates in different populations have led to a better understanding of the genetic and environmental risk factors involved. Similarly, research into the geographical distribution of skin pigmentation continues to yield important clues regarding risk of vitamin D deficiency and skin cancer. Here, we investigate whether variation in the shape of the external nose across populations has been driven by regional differences in climate. We find that variation in both nares width and alar base width appear to have experienced accelerated divergence across human populations. We also find that the geospatial distribution of nares width is correlated with temperature, and absolute humidity, but not with relative humidity. Our results support the claim that local adaptation to climate may have had a role in the evolution of nose shape differences across human populations.

Fun fact. Have you heard about the nasal cycle, an alternation of the amount and speed of airflow through either side the nose with a period of about 2.5 hours?

I had noticed it in myself forever ago but had never heard anyone talk about it until some day in the last 10 years I searched for it and found that it was a well-known phenomenon.

The scent sensitivity range benefit is something I only learned today as I read the Wikipedia article.

My sense of smell has gotten a lot better in the last few years (don't ask me why, but probably NOT working in an office). That said, taking a walk around the neighborhood you know how the dogs must feel.

"Ah, Amazon driver with too much cologne passed here an hour ago. PU!"

"Hmm, looks like that teenager girl with way too much perfume walked this way"

"Oh, the neighbors took a shower about 10 minutes ago"

"A baby with a dirty diaper in a stroller passed this way 30 minutes ago... Don't the parents know?!"
