Years ago, I switched our little Linksys/Cisco router out for a RaspberryPi configured as a firewall/router. I noticed an immediate jump in the speed of my home network. It also allowed me to set up scripts to automatically block our kids' internet access during certain hours, and a lot of other neat capabilities that simply aren't possible with most out-of-the-box routers.

I've been upgrading RPis as they are released.

Well, this is wonky and imperfect, but it's sturdy and will probably work better than the wall-planters I bought, and because it's Hessian, I didn't have to waste spoons on trying to make it perfect.

Looking forward to filling it with compost and plants!

Apologies for the poor photography, symptoms are high today. #gardening #diy @gardening

(As usual, please no critiques or advice.)

@susankayequinn very much in favor of making books more accessible and #DIY in this way! I got into #bookbinding a few months ago and found it to be much easier to make decent quality books than I'd ever expected! I favor the Pretty Perfect Paperback method but it's easy to jump to hardcovers from there! You can turn any PDF of an ebook into a print-ready version using online tools and I'd 100% encourage authors to release an interposed version so people can print and bind their own copies

I got this wooden wood box I inherited from my Grandpa when he died. Month ago or so I found another box thrifting from the exact same workshop that made mine. I don't know who made them, but they're handcarved and using like proper hardwood, so whomever made them didn't do so out of like crunch.

The one I found thrifting was originally a gamebox, compartmentalized in two for dice and a stack of cards.
It was not really handy for me, since the lip of the upper was too big, making it super hard to take off. And the compartments was two small for anything.

So, I took the tedious task to grind slots into a hardwood box with a rotary tool with no torque and the smallest files in he world. A lot of wooddust later, two stripped brass screws, and an inyury to my thumb later I finally got the hinges on :pikaAngryCry:

To make my box and it pop more, I also added some brass corner protectors and a lock to the new box, and I think it turned out really well :blobPikaHappy:

So, whenever possible, I stick to household solutions to remove rust -- lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar -- and a lot of elbow grease. As for rust-proofing the objects afterwards? That can be a bit problematic, since it seems most rust-preventing paints for metal contain PFAS (I'm looking into alternatives. Linseed oil paint might be good for metal). Mineral spirits and paraffin wax are another way to rust-proof metal, but both are petroleum products. Limonene and beeswax might be a petroleum-free way to rust-proof metal, but I haven't tried it yet (though I have both on hand). Feel free to chime in with suggestions!

My quadriplegic cousin in his nursing home, they use a goose-neck mounted sip and puff tube he blows into to activate his call light. Trouble is, his anti bed-sore mattress keeps inflating and deflating so the end of the hose ends up in his cheek, forehead, or eye!

Just finished designing, and I'll build it up in the next couple of weeks, an interface that will activate the call light using his cell phone, which is completely voice controlled.

Already have his TV that way! #DIY

@Schneems disassembly: 15m to 2 hours. If it just uses screws that’s easy. Sometimes there are plastic bits that snap together when assembling. You need to know where and how to press/bend to un-snap. Easier if you done this a number of times before. Sometimes using a flat tipped screwdriver with a tiny blade is good for prying apart these snap joints.

If you get it apart share pictures. Likely the points are managed by a very simple mcu and might need reprogramming (hard).
