Years ago, I switched our little Linksys/Cisco router out for a RaspberryPi configured as a firewall/router. I noticed an immediate jump in the speed of my home network. It also allowed me to set up scripts to automatically block our kids' internet access during certain hours, and a lot of other neat capabilities that simply aren't possible with most out-of-the-box routers.

I've been upgrading RPis as they are released.

Finally I was able to discover my #Docker #containers automatically as services on my #gethomepage deployment. The issue was pretty simple and a stupid one in the end. 🫣 Running the homepage container as root when using Docker socket directly solved it. It is mentioned in the documentation, but I overlooked it for some reason. 🙄

I‘m still excited for the widget. Need to dig into building customized widgets. Anyone experiences?

Job done. 9 x 80mm holes cut in the ply at the back for cables and ventilation.

Top drawer contains power board, router, an old Mac Mini running AdGuard Home, Tapo T315 Temperature and Humidity Monitor.

Bottom drawer contains 4-port Netgear switch, Fingbox, Tapo H200 hub, Home Assistant Green.

Under desk no longer a dusty trip hazard. Just Starlink cable, power for monitor, Belkin Qi2 charger, and MacBook Pro, and TP-Link AV1300 3-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerline base station.

This could likely have been done much better, but this cost me nothing except 2 hours of my time.

Just got an email from Microsoft, telling me they will raise the price of MS 365 from 140 AUD to 180 AUD.

Time to rethink that solution.

For office apps we can move to LibreOffice, I think that will work more than fine for our needs.

I have been using OneDrive as backup (simply because we had it.), moving away from that definitely will need some research.

Any suggestions from #homelab / #homenetwork people regarding online backup services? I don't need that much. 0.5 TB would be fine, but 1TB would give some room going forward.

#GoodMorning! My Wife has plans, so I'm turning into stay at home dad for a moment. No cycling today. My brain is going to get bored, so I'm gonna plan some more unnecessary purchases...😅

This is my overly complicated apartment #network! It doesn't have to be that overbuilt, but it is. And I'm planning more...

This still needs one more switch (like 16 ports, PoE) and maybe one more AP so I can look at nice graphs, logs and stats...😂

Suggestions on software to provide both ad blocking and other content filtering for an inline device? I'm familiar with Pi-Hole for ad blocking (I do this today with a raspberry pi that's inside the router's network) but not with other options. The problem with our current setup is that the Pi-Hole only helps with my wireless network; wired clients bypass it by connecting to the internet gateway directly (due to physical constraints).

Thinking of putting a dual-NIC device inline between my router and the internet, for whole-network ad blocking and other content/access control.

Probably a mini-PC running some Linux. Looking at Beelink and GMKtec as likely options.

It looks like there is actually no problem at all with #footiMac or my general network.

It's my wireless network that is freaking out. I am only getting 1Mbps throughput but devices on the wired network are getting 900+.

I'm running at 10BaseT speeds! lol.

So that's annoying….
It's either my Deco base stations, the physical cables, or the port/switch in the Telus router.

*Something* did not like the power outages!

Anyone have experience adding a #ethernet drop or two to new build (>2009) construction houses? This feels like a job that's too small for a *good* low voltage electrician but slightly out of my ability as an amateur. The house even has a junction box in the basement next to the ONT that goes to 6 different rooms in the house, just not the room that *I* want. In older places I've lived the walls were wide and accessible from the unfinished basement, so I'm not used to running stuff through all this spit and polish. #HomeNetwork #HomeNetworking

I think that’s the cleanest I could do without redoing cables and with no putty.

Since it’s on pretty good and the Ethernet keystone is in the wall there is a little chance kids with accidentaly kick it of the wall…😂 At least that’s what I hope for…🤡 I’m only worried that maybe ports should be facing down in case of spillage?🙈

And the most important part is the switch and the access point are working with full 1Gb speed!😔

God dammit! Took me a few hours to adopt a new switch into my #UniFi setup...😅

Initially, I thought the switch was DOA, but it was my impatience... Went for a dinner, angry and there it was, ready for adoption when I came back. :bulbasaurroll:

Then I fucked myself up by disabling VLAN tagging on the switch port, so no client could connect to AP it was powering on... :nkoFacepalm2:

Then I proceeded to move the APs for better coverage. Before and after on images...😎 #Network #HomeNetwork

I've somehow convinced my dear wife we need to buy another #UniFi managed switch. It will be another USW-Lite-8 PoE.

I plan to:
- install the new switch
- move both access points to optimize the coverage of our apartment (1AP will get PoE from the new switch)
- replace modem optic fiber patchcord because it's way to long
- finally solve socket situation (there are cables sticking out of the walls) in both rooms and fix the baseboard in place... :bulbasaurroll:
