Can't wait for the new rail line under Melbourne's CBD to open, it's much needed. I keep boarding Elizabeth Street trams headed for the hospital precinct & Melbourne Uni which are absolutely packed, even in the middle of the day (I'm on one now). The new line should take away some of that traffic.

Because of a material shortage, an old retired Mat 64 train dating back to the 60s and 70s, is going to be put back into service between Amersfoort, Barneveld and Ede-Wageningen! For the fans of classic Dutch trains, this is a really unique opportunity to see this train type in real service. They were once ubiquitous in the Netherlands, seen on most local train services until they were retired in the 2010s.

Something I love about rail travel (in the US) is that you see the backside of every town and city. The highway shows you the front they dress up for company. The railroad shows you the real place, history, neglect, weeds, and all.

I grew up in a railroad town, a place that exists because the railroad needed a stop there. Riding through these towns, it's like seeing my hometown turned inside out.

Bullay - avril 2011

Lors de la construction de la ligne ferroviaire Trier - Koblenz appellée Moselstrecke puisqu'elle suit de près (ou de loin entre Trier et Bullay) la vallée de la Moselle, un pont à deux étages fut construit à Bullay pour franchir la Moselle. Tandis que les trains circulent à l'étage supérieur, les voitures quant à elle, peuvent franchir la Moselle par l'étage inférieur.

Le viaduc est long de 314 m il donne accès au Prinzenkopftunnel et la bifurcation avec la ligne de Traben-Trarbach qui suit la Moselle tandis que la ligne vers Trier rejoint le plateau pour poursuivre vers Wittlich. De l'autre extrémité du viaduc, on atteint la gare de Bullay.

Le viaduc date de la fin du XIXe siècle et est inscrit au patrimoine du Land de Rhénanie-Palatinat.

Le viaduc a été renforcé aux alentours de 1930 face à l'augmentation du trafic et le poids des trains, endommagé à la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale et reconstruit à l'identique en 1947 et restauré en 1999-2000.

C'est le premier viaduc de ce genre jamais construit et est assez unique puisqu'il n'en existe que trois pour toute l'Allemagne.

🇬🇧 The Doppelstockbrücke of Bullay is an original construction on the Moseltrecke Trier - Koblenz as the trains are running on the upper level while the cars can cross the Mosel on the lower level. It is 314 m long and give access to the Prinzenkopftunnel just after crossing the Mosel up to the place where the railway to Traben-Trarbach separates from the main Line to Wittlich and Trier. From the other end, we reach the railway station of Bullay. Built in 1873-1875, it was modernised in 1929-1930 as the trains were heavier, partially destroyed at the end of WWII and reconstruct by 1947 and finally refurbished in 1999-2000. It is a unique construction as there are only two other viaducts like this one in whole Germany. It is also on heritage list from the Land of Rheinland-Pfalz.

Si les trains sur la Moselweinbahn vers Traben-Trarbach sont assurés par les autorails VT 628, les trains régionaux entre Koblenz et Trier sont aux mains des locomotives BR 143 originaires de la RDA. Après la réunification de l'Allemagne, elles étaient omniprésentes dans tout le pays avec des rames de voitures à deux étages pour les express régionaux et des voitures Silberlinge pour les trains omnibus (RB). Il y avait encore quelques trains grandes lignes tractés par les locomotives bi-fréquences BR 181.2. A few months ago I visited the Grand Canyon by train all the way from LA. I write about the experience for Traveller today in The Age or Sydney Morning Herald - pick up a copy of either newspaper to read the story (I'll share the online version here when it becomes available).

Without a good alternative it's hard to change travel habits.
