#HannahArendt spoke unequivocally about the nature and danger of Totalitarian regimes to their citizens rights and freedoms. History is apparently stuck on this track like an old, jumpy scratched vinyl 33 trying to play a party, repeating itself compulsively.

“In “Origins,” Arendt held that “totalitarianism replaces all first-rate talent with crackpots and fools, whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty.””

Arendt on the constant danger of losing "factual truth" forever:

"The chances of factual truth surviving the onslaught of power are very slim indeed; it is always in danger of being maneuvered out of the world not only for a time but, potentially, forever. Facts and events are infinitely more fragile things than axioms, discoveries, theories -- even the most wildly speculative ones -- produced by the human mind; they occur in the field of the ever-changing affairs of men, in whose flux there is nothing more permanent than the admittedly relative permanence of the human mind's structure. Once they are lost, no rational effort will ever bring them back."

Deception, Obfuscation & Misdirection

This is a concatenation of posts I originally made in 2016-2017--even more relevant today...

Most are familiar with the concept of #FUD—short for #Fear, #Uncertainty & #Doubt. It summarizes a strategy often used in marketing and political propaganda. Its effects are pernicious, divisive and lead to exploitation. Examples abound. Fear is a strong motivator! To resist FUD one must understand how it is practiced using the principles of #Deception, #Obfuscation and #Misdirection.

This is what #HannahArendt called "#theBanalityOfEvil"

To truly become an outright #fascist country, it doesn't happen like a cartoon light switch. It happens on a continuum we've been on since the #teaParty #GOP over a decade ago

And it seems like nonsense

So you laugh and you laugh

And your reaction makes sense

But nothing is stopping this. It doesn't matter how absurd it is. It's happening

So you need to stop laughing

The banality of evil
In addition to my earlier post on the importance of #empathy by #hannaharendt , #arendt also ‘coined’ #thebanalityofevil . Not ‘evil’ as we commonly define, but carried out by ‘normal people’ in a #totalitarianSystem losing the characteristics we would normally recognise as evil. The #usa is rapidly evolving in such a system under #trump. Recognize the systems and speak out!

"A Warning from Hannah Arendt"

"The death of human #empathy is one of the earliest and most telling signs of a culture about to fall into barbarism." – #hannaharendt
Arendt's powerful words remind us of the devastating consequences when empathy is systematically eroded. She witnessed firsthand the horrors of the 20th century, where propaganda and division dehumanized entire populations, paving the way for atrocities.”

Registration is required, but there is no fee.

In her masterpiece, The Origins of Totalitarianism, Arendt linked the horrors of Nazism and Stalinism, seeing them as twin manifestations of a terrifying new political system that sought absolute control over all aspects of life. How does this book, which probed the psychology and pathology of the twentieth century, take on new relevance in today’s political landscape?

(4/4) I know that I’m parroting platitudes, but we need to think creatively.

In one of her writings, #HannahArendt described #WalterBenjamin as being like a pearl diver, bringing old stones to the surface and seeing them in new light.

Benjamin couched his #Marxism in #mysticism, and was able to see more creatively than others. We need more Walter Benjamins.

At the same time, we need to get over negative critique and begin developing a positive vision. #Solarpunk is only the first step.
