HEY #SEATTLE

The old Bus Tunnel station rail lines need serious work and are gonna be semi-closed for like TEN DAYS IN APRIL, which sounds like a spy novel but is mostly just a pain in the ass:

April 14 to April 23, they'll be letting like two trains an hour go through between stations and that's it. Outside the work zone will be normal.

Put it in your calendars!

Sigh, public engagement portals are often so bad. I was pointed at this one for #SoundTransit (about a segment in #Seattle) -- crossingsafetyst.org/. The first page has a "Let's Go" button which I click. It loads this page. I couldn't figure out how to continue to where I give comment. Turns out there is a tiny right arrow at the bottom that I could click but I didn't notice it because it just seemed like visual noise. I had to turn on VoiceOver to "find" it. At least that worked?

"Weekends don’t necessarily come with less ridership demand. Weekend ridership on the 1 Line has been outpacing weekday ridership in many cases over the past few months, as Link becomes an essential way to access entertainment and sporting events. Nonetheless, Sound Transit has continued its practice of scheduling its most disruptive maintenance work on weekends."

This is absurd. I pretty much only take the Light Rail on weekends, and that's when all the service disruptions occur. Sound Transt should at least do some of them on weekdays.

The Urbanist - Examining urban policy to improve cities and quality of life. · Biden Infrastructure Law Mostly Funded Road Expansion, Leading to Climate Backsliding - The Urbanist# A new report shows most states continue to funnel money toward highway expansion, locking in climate pollution, despite new tools to fund transit and other forms of climate action. This is a losing strategy for both the environment and increasing mobility options.

I wish all Sound Transit board members would subscribe to text alerts for 1 Line status updates. I think they’d get a better idea of how frequently service is disrupted.

I mean ideally, they’d all be using public transit on a regular basis basis. But short of that, I want them to know every time Link Light Rail is single-tracking due to a mechanical issue or blockage on the street-level tracks.

Continued thread

Given how loooooooong #SoundTransit 1 Line and 2 Line are / will be and how much more reliable bike+train are compared to bus+train trips, the trains really need a bike and big things car with fewer seats and more space for bikes and other big things like Caltrain in the SF bay area. My mom should be able to do trike+train trips but that's infeasible now. #SeaBikes #Seattle

Possibly unpopular opinion but #SoundTransit light rail is not really a great bike+transit option if you need the bike on both ends unless:

- you can lift your bike to the hooks fast (I can't even with my lightest bike) even with folks boarding around you (& have no pannier bag)
- you can afford a $$ fast folding bike
- your trips are always outside busy times so there's room to stand with your bike (and you can stand with your bike)
