Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer
Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily.

The night sky is often cloaked in Oregon. Tonight it was there for my delight. The moon, some planets, and some stars. What a gem of a moment.

Garriott was a computer game pioneer and son of a Skylab astronaut. He flew to the ISS in 2008 with Space Adventures. Round about that time (my Moon book was out but LRO was not in orbit) he contacted me about a map of the Lunokhod 2 area. This is the map I made.
How will this compare with what LRO showed us?

Spacecraft in space or on the Moon or other bodies are owned by the entity responsible for creating them - ownership doesn't change because something stops working or is far away. So the Apollo hardware is owned by the US Government, and the Luna landers by Russia as the successor to the Soviet Union. Except for Luna 21 and Lunokhod 2. They were auctioned by Sotheby's for NPO Lavochkin in 1993 and bought by Richard Garriott for $68,500. #moon #luna21 #lunokhod2

This is the rest of the Lunokhod 2 map as it was published in 2007, in three sections. The letters signify different experiments, but we will see more of that later. The problem with the map is the way the line is placed on the base map. Then its position could only be guessed, now we can actually see the tracks. Also, as we are going to see, many fine details are omitted here.
